Tax saga and how does the UK compare

The authorities governing UK tax have confirmed the serach engine giant Google is to pay £130m in back taxes.

There are though suugestions that other European tax authorities are speaking to the search engine provider in relation to far larger claims.

So how has the UK decided on a figure of £130m?

The UK's tax authorities cannot stipulate how the figure has been derived "for reasons of confidentiality", but as HMRC has agreed Google's tax affairs are legal, should the arrangement not be disclosed?

As a taxpayer I understand the tax regeme to be a transparent process.

If Google has acted within the law,

are they being penalised for acting in the best interests of their stakeholders? Isn't this simply corporate enterprise? Perhaps, if there is to be an ethical consideration and a manipulation of the tax regeme, it is for the Government to close these loop holes in the first place.
